Waste production and separate collection in the metropolitan area of Turin. How does it change with the Covid-19?

In a short interview Agata Fortunato, an official of the Metropolitan City of Turin, takes stock of the trend of waste production in the territory in this period of health emergency. First of all, Fortunato points out, it is interesting to note how waste in March has decreased in a consistent way, reaching an overall figure of -11.5% compared to March 2019, numbers that had not been recorded even after the crisis of 2008-2009. On the separate waste collection front, the signs are comforting for the moment: in fact, the decrease was 0.6% compared to last year, but data more in line with reality will be compared to March 2020 and the following months. What worries Fortunato is the "probable growth in the consumption of disposable materials, not only gloves and masks, but also and above all packaging following the increase in online sales and delivery. " She concludes, "I am concerned not only about the growth of this waste, the lack of attention of some citizens in the delivery - we now read about abandoned gloves and masks on a daily basis - but also the lack of attention, even at a central level, to prevention". This theme has already been addressed on more than one occasion by our editorial staff. We would like to remind you that gloves, masks, handkerchiefs and disposable wipes are currently non-recoverable and once they have been disposed of they must be returned to the undifferentiated collection, taking into account the indications of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità both in the case of subjects who are positive to the swab or in compulsory quarantine and for all other subjects. Let's follow these simple rules, it is important! Thank you.
