The Historical Center of Turin embraces the 'door to door' in the collection of urban waste

With the arrival of autumn, the city of Turin is preparing for the change of its urban waste collection system in the historic center: the road system currently present will be replaced by the home collection system. This project will involve both domestic and commercial users.

The company Amiat Group Iren, responsible for waste collection in the city, has launched an information campaign to prepare the citizens in the next introduction of the new system. The actions of the citizenship support campaign include the provision of home collection kits, containing waste bins and bags for organic waste, together with detailed information material.
The traditional road containers used to date will be gradually removed and replaced by new suitable containers inside the apartment buildings. The implementation phase of the "door to door" system will be completed by the end of the year in the following areas: Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, Via Carlo Alberto, Piazza Castello, Via Pietro Micca and Corso Re Umberto. This change will extend to the entire historic center of Turin by 2024.
The main objective of this transformation is to significantly increase the percentage of separate collection. Road collection is in fact an ineffective method to ensure proper separate collection. Specifically, the city center is the last area where road collection was still practiced, which among other things did not include the collection of organic waste.
As can be deduced from the data collected in the waste report of the Metropolitan Waste Observatory of Turin has not yet managed to reach 65% of separate waste collection, as required by national legislation and the regional waste plan. The city has continued to struggle with numerous violations, both by companies and private citizens, concerning the improper disposal in designated containers or the abandonment of waste on the street.

To ensure a smooth transition, from 21 September, an information point will be active at the "Sala Valfrè" of the Oratorio San Filippo Neri, located in via Accademia delle Scienze 11. This service will be available on Thursdays and Fridays from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm and on Saturdays from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm, allowing citizens to receive more information and pick up the starter kit if needed.

Until now, the waste collection service provided by Amiat Gruppo Iren in Turin has been organised in neighborhoods and has followed two main models: road collection and home collection, the latter through the "door to door", and the "smart eco-islands" (smart bins for those domiciled in the area). The city centre was the last area where road collection was still used.
The "door to door" system proves to be more effective than road collection, as it manages to intercept larger quantities of differentiated waste. This statement is supported by data collected by the Metropolitan Waste Observatory and made public by Amiat, showing that in the neighborhoods in which the new collection system was introduced in recent years, there has always been an increase in the amount of separate waste collected.
In conclusion, the introduction of the "door-to-door" system will represent a significant step in the modernisation of waste management in the centre of Turin, offering citizens a new, more practical and convenient method of disposing of their waste.
