SERR (European Week for Waste Reduction), takes place every year with a specific focus: the one chosen for the year 2022 was "Circular and Sustainable Textiles", with the aim of pushing the textile sector towards a more sustainable and circular production and consumption model.

On Thursday, June 1, 2023, during the Circular Economy Hotspot 2023 - an event that provides an annual opportunity to promote successful circular initiatives, best practices and recent innovations - the award ceremony for the winning actions of SERR 2022 was held in Dublin. With no small amount of difficulty, the jury selected 16 finalist actions for the ceremony from 58 applications from across Europe.

During the award ceremonies, presented by Serena Lisai, which were also streamed live, all 16 European finalist actions of the fourteenth edition were showcased. The most creative and impactful action selected by the jury as the single winner among the different categories was "Eurotextil circular" by Euroregion Pyrenees-Mediterranean, a cooperation project between Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and Occitania that won the European Special Prize. In addition, the following actions were also awarded in each category:

  • Public administrations or organizations: "Bergische Kostümbörse - Give your costume a 2nd session!" by Bergischer Abfallwirtschaftsverband, in Lindlar, Germany;
  • Business and industry: "RE-THEATER" by Barbara Sárdi, in Kecskemét (Hungary);
  • Associations and NGOs: "Fashion Forever Festival" of Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful;
  • Educational institutions: "Acoustic Panels from recycled material" by St. George British International School, in Leioa (Spain);
  • Citizens: "Repair Café Talheim" of District Office Heilbronn, waste management division in cooperation with all citizens and LebensWerkstatt Talheim, in Talheim (Germany)

Finalist actions include the project "Communication campaign 'Do you have the right stuff?'" carried out by the association Fare ECO in Reggio Calabria, in partnership with the associations Pandora, Artemis  and Rifiuti Zero Reggio Calabria. The initiative worked to promote a more sustainable lifestyle among citizens through the themes of recovery, repair and reuse. Specifically, the action was divided into several workshops, some more practical and others more theoretical, which then resulted in solidarity actions strongly aimed at supporting local activities and people.

Finally, the awards ceremony was also a theater for the first previews of the 15th edition of SERR. Also in 2023, precisely between November 18 and 26, citizens from all over Europe will be called upon to devise a reduction, reuse and recycling action with thematic focus "Packaging", which accounts for 36 percent of municipal solid waste, according to European Commission data.
