The quarterly data on waste delivered to the Turin waste-to-energy plant (TRM) have been updated on the Metropolitan City of Turin's website, by the Metropolitan Waste Observatory.
Undifferentiated urban waste represents the residual waste from household collection where everything that cannot be sorted and therefore recycled is found. This waste can have a different fate depending on the area: mechanical biological treatment, landfill or waste-to-energy plant. The last option involves the conversion of this waste material into electrical and thermal energy. Currently, almost all undifferentiated urban waste in the territory of the Metropolitan City of Turin is delivered to TRM, which provides monthly data on the quantities managed by the plant. These quantities show the share of undifferentiated urban waste coming from the metropolitan territory and from outside, but also the share of special waste (non-urban and non-recoverable waste) entering the plant.
The latest update shows an almost linear trend in the quantities delivered to the TRM, although with a slight increase in the last three months. As far as the metropolitan area is concerned, the well-known predominance of waste from the city of Turin (Bacino 18), which is responsible for almost 50% of the waste delivered, is highlighted. In addition, there was a slight increase in undifferentiated urban waste from outside the metropolitan area and in special waste (particularly in May and June).
With regard to waste coming from outside the Metropolitan City of Turin, it is interesting to note that the first six months of 2022 are characterised by decidedly larger quantities than in the past: in fact, since the end of 2021 there has been a significant increase in these quantities, from a few dozen to more than 2,700 tonnes per month on average.
