The 2023 Waste Report of the Metropolitan City of Turin has been published

On Wednesday 13 December 2023, the Waste Observatory of Città Metropolitana di Torino published the Annual Report on the state of the 2023 waste management system. The main objective of the document is to provide essential tools to the Consorzi di Area Vasta (CAV), the Municipalities and the newly formed Regional Conference, in order to analyze in depth the production and integrated management of urban waste in the metropolitan area.

The data presented, referring to the 2022 survey year, indicate an overall reduction of 2% in the total production of municipal waste, with a slight but significant increase in separate collection in the City of Turin. These results are influenced by the habits that emerged during the pandemic, such as the widespread adoption of home delivery services, the increase in online purchases and the practice of smart working.

The total production of municipal waste in 2022 decreased by almost 22,000 tons compared to 2021, confirming the trend of decrease compared to the values of the pre-pandemic period (-28,000 tons compared to 2019). Separate collection has shown a slight increase, attributable in particular to the extension of home and neighbourhood services.

Tourist areas, especially the mountain range, have the highest per capita production, influenced by the periodic presence of non-residents. A further fact that arouses interest is the high per capita production recorded in some municipalities of CAV CB16, with a constant growth in the last 10 years.

Overall, urban waste production undifferentiated in 2022 decreased by 3.8%, confirming a downward trend that began in 2019. The City of Turin has recorded a reduction of 4%, while some territories have seen a slight increase.

The most positive figure concerns the percentage of separate collection, which in 2022 exceeded 62.1%, although below the target of 65% set in 2012. The CAV CCS reached 82.7%, exceeding the target already in previous years, while the City of Turin recorded a percentage of 54.4%. For Turin, growth is expected to increase as a result of the progressive spread of the door-to-door system in the city’s historic centre during 2024.

The Report also analyses the product composition of the differentiated waste: the fractions of organic/green and paper are confirmed as the two principles, representing about half of the collection.

More than half of metropolitan municipalities passed 65% separate collection in 2022, but this objective remains a challenge especially for large ones.
