In 2018, 260,000 tons of waste vegetable oils were produced in Italy, of which 166,000 came from households, but so far only a quarter of household waste was destined for biorefineries for biodiesel production. Everything else is dispersed in the environment or thrown into the sinks, causing serious repercussions on the environment. In order to allow citizens to deliver waste oils to super and hypermarkets in recent days, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Conoe, (National Consortium for the collection and treatment of vegetable and animal oils and fats), and Federdistribuzione, the organization of Organized Modern Distribution companies. An awareness campaign on the correct management of this waste is also planned.
