At the start of the “A Buon Rendere – molto più di un vuoto” campaign

On March 4, the Comuni Virtuosi association, together with a large number of environmental associations, launched the "A Buon Rendere – molto più di un vuoto" campaign. The goal is to stimulate the introduction of a national Deposit System that is mandatory for all beverage producers. The system should cover all types of beverages in plastic bottles, glass and cans. The system is very simple: the consumer pays for the drink purchased with a small surcharge, as a deposit, which will be returned once the empty packaging is returned to a collection point.

The deposit represents an excellent incentive to increase the interception rate and therefore the recycling of packaging, giving a great boost in achieving the European recycling objectives. In fact, among the EU Member States, those that have a deposit system in place have an interception rate for beverage bottles of 94%, while for those without one it follows that the percentage drops drastically to 47%.

The launch of the campaign is “molto più di un vuoto” focuses on raising awareness among citizens, politics, the beverage industry and organized distribution, regarding the benefits of a deposit system. To this end, the campaign will make use of tools such as petitions, polls, public events and citizen science activities. At the beginning of February 2022, a research was carried out to understand the opinions of Italians regarding the introduction of a deposit system on single use packaging. From the interviews of over 1,000 people, it emerged that 83% are in favor of its introduction.

All citizens can participate by signing the petition and spreading the news of the campaign.
