Abandoned plastic waste is not present "only" in terrestrial and marine environments, where they cause serious damage. Microplastics, in fact, can be ingested by zooplankton, invertebrates and small fish, thus entering the human food chain. A recent study by the University of Pisa highlights how this form of environmental contamination can be almost ubiquitous. Not forgetting that one of the main risks is that microplastics act as collectors of pollutants, even highly toxic to health.
