A preview of the 2020 waste production and separate collection data in the territory of the Metropolitan City of Turin has been published

2020, as we all unfortunately know, was an exceptional year due to the pandemic - which is still ongoing - and waste is undoubtedly a particularly sensitive litmus test.

There have been significant reductions in total waste, non-recoverable waste and paper and cardboard; plastic and glass are growing, organic waste remains stable, as does separate waste collection.

All detailed data available.

Food waste: new UNEP report

One third of the food produced in the world is thrown away. According to the United Nations Environment Programme-UNEP report, we reduced food waste by 11% in 2020 compared to 2019. But there is still a long way to go.

The Food Waste Index Report was published in recent weeks, with the aim of providing tools to support the goals of SDG 12.3.

European Week of Waste Reduction 2021: meeting of Italian Promoting Commettee

Yesterday (20 January) the Italian Promoting Committee of #SERR, the largest communication campaign on waste reduction in Europe, met.

The meeting shared the theme to be proposed to Brussels for the 2021 edition and the date for the awards ceremony of the 2020 edition, which, due to restrictions, will be online next 25 March.

Fingers crossed for the choice of this year's theme!#SERR2021

Holidays = Food waste? No, if you share, store and create with Too Good To Go!

The Too Good To Go application, born in 2015 in Denmark with the aim of combating food waste and present today in 15 countries, has recently launched an initiative to raise awareness against waste that, inevitably, marks the period of holiday season. In fact, we know well how during these days purchases and gifts of food increase considerably: food is a pleasure, but also a “consolation”, especially in moments such as those we are experiencing.

Packaging waste: the European Commission launches a public consultation for the revision of the rules. Participate too!

Although the tendency to lighten many packaging has spread over the last thirty years, there has been a global increase in this type of waste, especially in the last period, also as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and changing purchasing habits. Furthermore, very often, packaging design did not sufficiently take into account the difficulties and costs of treatment (including collection and sorting), thus increasing the cost of recycling.

Cariplo Foundation against disposable plastic products. Thirteen reduction initiatives funded.

The phenomenon of the abnormal spread of disposable plastic objects and packaging (unfortunately aggravated by the Covid-19 pandemic), the serious environmental impact deriving from their uncontrolled abandonment in the environment and the actions that can be taken to combat the phenomenon, have long been at the center of the dialogue between stakeholders. Fortunately, concrete signs of greater awareness of the problem and willingness to tackle this real challenge to the "civilization" of throwaways are beginning to emerge.

"Cardboard is not beautiful if it is not a recycler". "Elio e le storie tese" to improve separate collection.

Can a musical catchphrase teach us to improve the separate collection of paper and cardboard, avoiding the most common mistakes? According to a research carried out by ASTRARICERCHE for Comieco (National Consortium for the Recovery and Recycling of Cellulose-based Packaging) the majority of Italians think so.
