Italians love tap water: 78% of Italian respondents drink it.

A recent research carried out by Open Mind Research on a sample of 2,000 people has investigated the socio-demographic profile of those who, in the last 12 months, have drunk treated and untreated tap water, at home or away from home, and the frequency of consumption . The research showed that the "water of the Mayor" appeals to approximately 78% of the interviewees, corresponding to a growth rate in 2018 which is close to 4%. Half of these people say they always or almost always do so, for convenience (25%), for the environment (24.8%) or because in this way you avoid transporting and disposing of plastic bottles. In addition to the use of home filtration systems to improve the organoleptic characteristics of the water, respondents said they were inclined to drink treated tap water even outside the home: 27% of respondents drink it in commercial establishments (+3.6 % compared to 2018) and 51% would drink it if they offered it to them. Finally, as regards the "water houses", the kiosks available to citizens who distribute drinking water (treated or untreated, refrigerated or with added carbon dioxide), half of the municipalities have placed at least one on the territory. The water houses are also present on the territory of the Metropolitan City of Turin: to know their location, you can consult the SMAT website

An environmentally sustainable choice, considering the high environmental impacts that the consumption of bottled water can generate, for example:

  • to produce the bottles that are used every year in Italy, 350,000 t of PET (or 665,000 t of oil) are needed and 910,000 t of CO2eq are emitted into the atmosphere.
  • 265,000 t of CO2 are emitted for the transport of bottles, mainly by truck.
  • plastic bottles become waste normally after only one use
