The European "From farm to fork" strategy: towards the sustainability of the food supply chain.

The new European Commission has declared, since the beginning of its mandate, the will to implement an ambitious and innovative program to make the economy of the European Union more sustainable. Thus was born the Green Deal, which aims to improve people's well-being, to make Europe climate-neutral and to protect the natural habitat. In concrete terms, the European Green Deal will be a "strategy", that is, it will be implemented through a series of measures of a different nature - including above all new laws and investments - which will be involved in the next thirty years. Among the specific measures related to the implementation of the Green deal we mention that, on May 22, the European Commission officially launched the "From Farm to Fork Strategy" , ie the ten-year plan developed to guide the transition towards a food system fair, healthy and environmentally friendly. It is the first time that the European Union tries to design a food policy that proposes measures and objectives that involve the entire food chain, from production to consumption, and distribution too.

The strategy includes 27 goals to be achieved by 2030; the actions and expected results are very ambitious, including:
    • 50% reduction in pesticide use and 20% fertilizer use
    • 50% reduction in the use of antibiotics for farms and aquaculture
    • achievement of at least 25% of the agricultural area for organic farming
    • halving per capita food waste (retail and consumers)
    • support for the use of innovative and sustainable food packaging (ecological, reusable and recyclable materials)
    • issue of legislation on the replacement of food packaging and disposable cutlery with reusable products in restaurant services.

The Commission intends to reward all those who have already implemented sustainability measures and to support operators in difficulty in the transition. The financial instrument identified is the Common Agricultural Policy which, since its inception in 1962, described a close understanding between agriculture and society, between Europe and its farmers and which in this new phase is expected to be destined for around 40 % of its total budget for environment-related actions.
